Mountains of GB

Gilgit-Baltistan is situated amongst world’s highest  mountains.There are  3 mountain ranges  Karakorum, Himalayas and Hindu Kush. These ranges have a large number of peaks ranging from 6000 to 8611 meters above the sea level within the radius of 180 kilometers. Jaglot is the Junction Point of these three great Mountain Ranges. Pakistan is home to 2nd highest mountain of the world; K2. Four’ Eight-Thousanders’ lie in the surroundings of Concordia; the confluence of Baltoro Glacier and Godwin Austen Glacier

K2

K2 is also known as Savage Mountain, Mountaineer’ Mountain, Mount Godwin-Austen,Chogoriand Sarikoli in Balti.K2 is the second highest mountain on Earth, with a peak elevation of 8,611 meters (28,251 feet). K2 is located on the border between Baltistan and Xinjiang, China. The name K2 is derived from the notation used by the Great Trigonometric Survey. Thomas Montgomery made the first survey of the Karakoram from Mount Haramosh, some 210 kilometers (130 miles) to the South, and sketched the two most prominent peaks, labeling them K1 (Masherbrum) and K2. The policy of the Great Trigonometric Survey was to use local names for mountains wherever possible and K1 was found to be known locally as Masherbrum, whereas, K2 did not have a local name, due to its remoteness.

Nanga Parbat

At 8,125 metres (26,660 feet) Nanga Parbat is the world’s ninth highest mountain.Nanga Parbat (literally; Naked Mountain in Urdu) also known as Killer Mountain is the 9th highest mountain on Earth. Nanga Parbat is one of the eight-thousanders, with a summit elevation of 8,126 meters (26,660 ft). An immensely, dramatic peak that rises far above its surroundings. It has three faces, Diamir face (West), Rakhiot (North) and Rupal (South).

It earned its grisly nickname after more than 30 climbers died trying to conquer it before the first successful summit in 1953.

Gasherbrum (K5)

Also known as Hidden Peak or K5, is the 11th highest peak on Earth, located on the Pakistan China Border in Gilgit Baltistan Region. It is part of the Gasherbrum Massif. Gasherbrum comes from “gasha” (beautiful) “brum” (mountain) in Balti, means located in the Karakoram “beautiful mountain.” In 1865, Gasherbrum I was designated K5 (meaning the 5th peak of the Karakoram by T.G. Montgomery. Later in 1892, William Martin Conway named it Hidden Peak.

Broad Peak


It is the 12th highest mountain on Earth, with an elevation of 8,051 meters

(26,414 feet).

It is located about 8 kilometers from K2. It has a summit over 1.5 kilometers long, thus it is known as “Broad Peak”.

Gasherbrum II (K4)

Gasherbrum II also known as K4, is the 13th highest mountain on Earth, located on the border of Gilgit Baltistan region and Xinjiang. At 8,035 meters (26,362 feet), Gasherbrum II is the second highest peak of the Gasherbrum Massif, located in the Karakoram Range.

 

Masherbrum

Also known as K1 is, 7,821 meters (25,659 ft) high. It is the 22nd highest mountain in the world and the 9th highest in Pakistan. It was the first scaled and mapped peak in the Karakoram Range. Name “Masherbrum” is from masha (queen or lady), meaning “queen of peaks.” It is a large and striking peak, which is somewhat overshadowed by 8,000 meters (26,000 ft) high peaks of the main Karakoram Range which include K2, Gasherbrum I, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum II.

Rakaposhi

It is situated in the Nagar Valley pproximately 100 kilometers North of Gilgit City. Rakaposhi means “Snow Covered” in the local language.

Rakaposhi is also known as Dumani “Mother of Mist”. It is ranked 27th world and 12th highest in Pakistan.

 

Sia Kangri

Sia Kangri is a 7,442 meters (24,370 ft) high mountain with its summit on the China Pakistan Border. It is the 63rd highest mountain in the world, and the 25th highest in Pakistan. Sia Kangri is within a kilometer of a tri-point where territories controlled by India, Pakistan and China meet. The land to the Northeast is part of the Trans Karakoram Tract, controlled by China under 1963 Border Agreement with Pakistan but claimed by India.

Trango Towers

The Trango Towers are a group of dramatic granite spires located on the North of Baltoro Glacier. The Towers offer some of the largest cliffs and most challenging rock climbing in the world. The highest point in the group is the summit of Great Trango Towers at 6,286 meters (20,608 feet). The East face of the Great Trango Towers features the world’s greatest nearly vertical drop.

The Himalaya Range

Usually called Himalayas, is a mountain range immediately at the North of Indian subcontinent. By extension, it also refers to the massive mountain system that includes the Karakoram, the Hindu Kush, and other ranges that extend out from the Pamir Knot. In Pakistan, famous peak of this range is Nanga Parbat.

Hindu Kush

The Hindu Kush is an 800 kilometers long mountain range that stretches from central Afghanistan to Northern Areas of Pakistan. The highest point in the Hindu Kush is Tirich Mir (7,708meters) in the Chitral region of KPK. It is also calculated to be the geographic center of the population of the world.

Saltoro Kangri

The Saltoro Mountains are a subrange of the Karakoram Range. They are located in the heart of the Karakoram, on the southwest side of the Siachen Glacier, one of the two longest glaciers outside of the polar regions.
